Book Cover Specifications
The author supplied cover must be done to these
specifications. We do not provide any support or assistance with
author supplied covers as this must be supplied in a print ready format. This
option is free of charge and if any work is required by us to make the
cover print ready the author will be required to purchase a cover. If you are
using this option please make sure your cover meets theses specifications prior to submission. You
should not select this option unless you are an experience graphic artist or
have a cover done by an experienced graphic artist.
If you are unable to to do so please choose our
standard cover or custom cover option and we will
create a cover formatted to these standards for you. If the author
supplied cover does not meet our minimum publishing standards it will be
rejected.
Cover file specifications
· All book covers should be in one pdf file. The
front, spine and back as one image.
· When
submitting a .pdf please embed all fonts (and all font family members used).
When submitting native files for standard black and white bookblocks and covers,
submit all screen and printer fonts, even the most common fonts; as your
version’s special characters, expansion sets, etc. may be slightly different
from HFP. HFP does not maintain font libraries.
· All covers must be
submitted in CMYK format at a 300dpi resolution.
· All fonts should include screen and printer fonts, even the
most common fonts.
· Covers should be produced on a document page, wide enough to
encompass the front, spine and back of the book, along with 0.125” bleed on all
sides (0.25” bleed required for color books).
· The width of the spine will vary depending on the number of
pages. Once you receive your final page count from your publishing specialist we
will let you know the spine calculation.
·
Do not include extraneous information such
as crop marks, web-press comments, etc.
· If scanning to create the digital file, scan all images at
300dpi CMYK.
· Convert all spot colors to CMYK, including those in .eps
files.
· All text should be at least 0.25” from trim edges of the book.
· Provide a spine safety of 1/16” on each side of text/artwork
on the spine. Spine text is only allowed on books 114 pages or more.
· Must provide a barcode box size is 1.75” wide by 1” high on
the back cover
· Black elements should NOT be built in “Registration” black.
These elements should be built out of “Rich” black. For best results, we
recommend the CMYK values of 60% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 40% Yellow, and 100% Black.
CMYK total value should NOT exceed 240%. The barcode should be built in 100%
Black only.
